La Cavalieri, also known as Francesca Caccini, was an Italian Baroque composer, singer, and lutenist. She was born on September 18, 1587, in Florence, Italy, and died on March 10, 1641. La Cavalieri was the daughter of the renowned composer and singer, Giulio Caccini, and was part of a musical family. She was one of the few women composers of her time to have her music published, and her works include operas, monodies, madrigals, and instrumental music.
La Cavalieri performed for several important figures of her time, including King Louis XIII of France and the Medici court in Florence. She was also a member of the court of Archduchess Maria Maddalena of Austria and composed music for several court events.
La Cavalieri's most famous work is her opera, "La Liberazione di Ruggiero," which was first performed in 1625 for the marriage of Prince Giovanni Carlo de' Medici and Princess Cristina of Lorraine. The opera is considered to be one of the earliest examples of opera written by a woman.
La Cavalieri was a pioneer for women in the music industry and broke barriers for female composers and performers.
